Leaks & Bursts – working together with Optimise

2012 sees Ashridge Engineering continuing to work with Optimise to provide Hydroguard ® trunk main monitoring systems as part of their contract awards for asset monitoring equipment.

Optimise is a joint venture between J Murphy and Sons, Barhale Construction plc, Clancy Docwra Ltd and MWH. It has been awarded several prestigious AMP5 contracts by Thames Water over the 5 year contract period.

Hydroguard ® is a tri-parameter system, which uses sophisticated algorithms to compress mains flow, pressure and leak-noise data for transmission by SMS or GPRS.

Hydroguard ® learns what is normal pipeline activity and multiple high, low or combination alarms can be set accordingly.  Following post processing analysis of alarm data, the Hydroguard ® determines the failed asset and identifies the shuttable section.

The use of a robust, highly sensitive leak noise sensor, with no moving parts, provides a signal with high immunity from background noise using techniques developed by Ashridge Engineering. The external accelerometer can also be used in situ by 3rd party correlators, therefore, maximising the use of the sensors.

Reducing Leakage with Bristol Water

In support of Bristol Water’s leakage detection activities, we recently supplied a large number of Night Flow Readers (now known as Flo-Log ®).  The compact, manual
logger counts pulses from the meter and monitors the accumulated total flow, daily total flows and windowed flows, as well as displaying the minimum flow logged in a 24 hour period.  The units are cost effective, simple to install and set up, with fast serial port speed of 57,600 Baud ensuring download times are kept to a minimum.

Frank van der Kleij, Deputy Director of Network at Bristol Water said “As Ashridge Engineering design and manufacture in-house they have been able to flex the specification of the NFR in order to suit our specific needs and, therefore, making it a great addition to our leakage detection tools.”

Z-Tech, who provide engineering solutions in the Power, Control and Information industries, hosted its second golf day at the Millbrook Golf Club recently, with donations to Water Aid.

Although unable to attend, Ashridge Engineering were proud to support the event by sponsoring the “Beat the Pro” competition, which saw PGA Pro Rob Brightman pitching his skills against Z-Tech’s customers for ‘closest the pin’. Chris Mason from CMAK Finance won the competition by 6 inches! This raised a significant amount towards the final donation to Water Aid.

Distributor News – Detection Services, Australia

It has been a hot dry summer in the Southern State of Victoria this year with only 0.4mm of rain since mid-December and temperatures have maintained a constant 30-38 degrees Celsius.

During this period, Detection Services Pty Ltd has been very busy providing Field Support Services in mid-Victoria for Coliban Water, Goulburn Valley Water and City West Water in Melbourne.

We have been monitoring a Big Hill Tanknumber of towns for network modelling and currently have over 250 Textlog I & II loggers installed in the regional towns, plus a further 60 in Melbourne.

With the loggers sending data on a daily basis via the SMS function, it can save us many hundreds of kilometres in driving and hours in time, especially with regards to the difficult to access sites. With the alarms set, it also enables us to quickly identify issues that can be addressed in hours rather than days, thus minimising the loss of data. We have also been using Ashridge 2 bar 9000 series pressure transducers on reservoir sites,  which have been connected to Textlog I loggers and the data sent back remotely on a daily basis.

We are finding the reliability of the loggers to be very good and bearing in mind many of them are being subjected to continuous sunny conditions which can reach in excess of 40 degrees Celsius.

On a lighter note, its great working in these regional towns if you like flies and kangaroos as there is nothing like a drive up a long bush track to get to a reservoir site only to be greeted by a mob of kangaroos which is a surprise and momently scare for both parties! So what can I say about the fly’s! They are attracted like magnets to your face and enter every orifice you can think of! Try talking without opening your mouth, great for a ventriloquist to practice, and the more you flick at them the more they come.

In addition, we should not forget those long sticky looking things with fangs that are always lurking around reservoirs and pits that we put our hands in! Some of the most venomous snakes live here in Australia and if we are going to see them it will be on a reservoir or water chamber.

All a bit different from life in the UK.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ashridge on their customer support and especially the Cornish Boy who is always there to resolve our queries at a drop of a hat!

Ashridge’s Hydroguard supports Crossrail Works

Ashridge, market leaders in protection, control and monitoring equipment, are supplying Hydroguard to help provide 24 hour monitoring to water main assets in London during Crossrail tunnelling and upgrade works.

Crossrail Tunnel Boring Machine

Hydroguard is an intelligent monitoring system which measures flow, pressure and leak noise data to provide high integrity water trunk and transfer mains data.

Crossrail is the new high frequency, convenient and accessible railway for London and the South East. When the service opens, Crossrail trains will travel from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east via new twin tunnels under central London. It will link Heathrow Airport, the West End, the City of London and Canary Wharf.

Crossrail have chosen Hydroguard to help monitor and protect water pipelines during the vital works required. The units will monitor the water mains before works commence and continue to monitor and review the water network throughout the construction. Any unusual or unexpected change in the data Hydroguard receives will instigate an alarm condition, which will provide the utility control room with the data it requires to take the necessary action.

Angela Gordon Lennox, Business Development Manager at Ashridge said “We are delighted to have the opportunity to support this significant project with Crossrail. Hydroguard is a well-established and proven monitoring system, providing a cost effective, battery operated monitoring and alarm system. Hydroguard was developed many years ago working closely with a major water company and has evolved over the years in line with customer needs and expectations. The intelligent and flexible nature of Hydroguard has enabled the system to cater for the various critical stages within the Crossrail programme of works and our latest software, Smartchart Web provides an intuitive and easy to analyse platform for graphical viewing of the data.”

Ashridge, leading transformer temperature indicator manufacturer, have achieved National Grid Type Registration across their complete range of 852 winding and oil temperature Indicators (WTI/OTI’s).

The Type Registration approval is a documented risk management process, which enables National Grid to verify that equipment connected to the grid complies with a number of technical specifications and requirements.

Achieving the registration recognises Ashridge’s compliance with National Grid’s stringent specifications and endorses the 852 range of indicators suitability for use with substation transformers.

Ashridge’s 852 WTI/OTI’s are high integrity protection control and monitoring systems for power transformers.  The extensive range features 10 different models, and provides multiple relays, data logging, 1, 2, or 3 winding versions, dual display and an intelligent cooling control system ensuring optimal asset life and protection for the transformer.

Alan Orchard, Managing Director for Ashridge said “We have been fortunate to have worked with National Grid since 1994 and have held National Grid approval on our 852Plus since 1999.  We are delighted to have now achieved National Grid approval across the whole range of our WTI’s, which is comprehensive and provides the complete, industry standard protection system for transformers”.
