It has been a hot dry summer in the Southern State of Victoria this year with only 0.4mm of rain since mid-December and temperatures have maintained a constant 30-38 degrees Celsius.
During this period, Detection Services Pty Ltd has been very busy providing Field Support Services in mid-Victoria for Coliban Water, Goulburn Valley Water and City West Water in Melbourne.
We have been monitoring a
number of towns for network modelling and currently have over 250 Textlog I & II loggers installed in the regional towns, plus a further 60 in Melbourne.
With the loggers sending data on a daily basis via the SMS function, it can save us many hundreds of kilometres in driving and hours in time, especially with regards to the difficult to access sites. With the alarms set, it also enables us to quickly identify issues that can be addressed in hours rather than days, thus minimising the loss of data. We have also been using Ashridge 2 bar 9000 series pressure transducers on reservoir sites, which have been connected to Textlog I loggers and the data sent back remotely on a daily basis.
We are finding the reliability of the loggers to be very good and bearing in mind many of them are being subjected to continuous sunny conditions which can reach in excess of 40 degrees Celsius.
On a lighter note, its great working in these regional towns if you like flies and kangaroos as there is nothing like a drive up a long bush track to get to a reservoir site only to be greeted by a mob of kangaroos which is a surprise and momently scare for both parties! So what can I say about the fly’s! They are attracted like magnets to your face and enter every orifice you can think of! Try talking without opening your mouth, great for a ventriloquist to practice, and the more you flick at them the more they come.
In addition, we should not forget those long sticky looking things with fangs that are always lurking around reservoirs and pits that we put our hands in! Some of the most venomous snakes live here in Australia and if we are going to see them it will be on a reservoir or water chamber.
All a bit different from life in the UK.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ashridge on their customer support and especially the Cornish Boy who is always there to resolve our queries at a drop of a hat!
